The sides, or temples, of the Jin glasses don't hook around the ears like normal glasses do. This is meant to make it easier for people to look at their phones while lying sideways on a pillow. The glasses cost about $42, not including corrective lenses.

The glasses are "a great fit for watching smartphones or televisions while lying down," the company said.

Studies have shown that it takes longer for those who use smartphones and other electronic devices before bedtime to fall asleep. Using devices can also disrupt the body clock and make it harder for people to wake up and become alert the next morning.

A study of 562 people in May by Tokyo-based Mobile Marketing Data Labo found that 76 per cent of them often or sometimes use their smartphones between the time they get into their bed or futon and the time they fall asleep.
