J.K. Rowling Says Harry Potter is Done After Cursed Child

It’s an exciting weekend to be a Harry Potter fan, but it might also be a depressing one. Author J.K. Rowling has confirmed (or “confirmed,” as I’m gonna put it) that the story of our beloved Boy Who Lived has come to an end.

Speaking at the Palace Theatre on the premiere of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, Rowling told the press that Harry’s journey in the two-part play has brought his story to a close, making way for new characters and stories.

“[Harry] goes on a very big journey during these two plays and, then, yeah, I think we’re done,” Rowling said. “This is the next generation, you know. So, I’m thrilled to see it realized so beautifully but, no, Harry is done now.”

That doesn’t mean we’ll never see Harry Potter again. In fact, I’m willing to stake a lot of butterbeer on the fact that he’s not going anywhere. After all, this isn’t the first time we’ve heard Rowling (or her spokesperson) say that she’s not writing any more adult Harry Potter stories. And technically she hasn’t, since Jack Thorne wrote the script for Cursed Child, but still, come on.

Rowling likely means that Harry’s role as protagonist is moving on to someone else close to him, whether it’s continuing Albus’ journey or seeing more of James. Heck, I’d love to see a spinoff about Rose Granger-Weasely.

In the meantime, Harry Potter fans around the world are diving into the printed script of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child Parts 1 & 2. which went on sale at midnight Sunday. It’s predicted to be one of the best-selling books of the year.
