Back in 2013, the entry-levelNokia Lumia 520 was the most popular Windows Phone handset in the world. 28 months later, the little handset that could is still the most widely used Windows Phone model in the world. The latest data comes from cross-promotion network AdDuplex, which gets to see certain information about Windows Phone handset usage.
As of last week, the Lumia 520 made up 12.9% of Windows Phone models currently in use globally. Next, with 11.7%, was theMicrosoft Lumia 535. The Microsoft Lumia 640 had a 6.3% slice of the Windows Phone pie, while theMicrosoft Lumia 640 XL owned 3.3%. AdDuplex blames the high pricing of the Microsoft Lumia 950 and Microsoft Lumia 950 XL for the failure of these two models to appear on the chart.
The numbers are different in the U.S. where the Nokia Lumia 635 accounted for 30.9% of Windows Phone handsets in use. The Microsoft Lumia 640 was next with 18.2%, followed by T-Mobile's entry level Nokia Lumia 521 (5.2%).
Globally, Windows Phone 8.1 was the OS build most widely in use among Windows Phone users, owning a 77.7% piece of the pie. With 9.5%, Windows 10 Mobile was next. Windows Phone 8 (8.4%) and Windows Phone 7.x (4.3%) rounded out the rest of the builds tracked.
No surprise, Nokia/Microsoft Lumia branded Windows Phones accounted for a whopping 96.97% of the handsets that run on the platform. HTC was next with 1.21% of the market, followed by Samsung's .59%.
