Duke Nukem is Back (Again)

Duke Nukem is Back (Again)

Gearbox Software is releasing a new 20th anniversary version of the classic Duke Nukem 3D first-person shooter, which includes a brand-new episode and lots of new Duke one-liners.

What is Duke may never die. The epicly oldschool first-person shooter Duke Nukem 3D is coming back, and fans of the game—long-time fans of the game, given that it's now celebrating its 20th anniversary—are going to get a little new content to play and some extra, (likely crude) one-liners to laugh at.

The newly announced Duke Nukem 3D: 20th Anniversary World Tour, from Gearbox Software, is currently scheduled to be released on October 11. It'll cost interested PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC gamers (via Steam) $20 to play, but the game itself isn't going to be just a simple re-release for modern platforms. Gearbox has gone in and remastered the game into a new "True 3D" mode, and you'll be able to switch between this and the game's classic rendering on the fly.

"Frag like it's 1996 – this time with even more asses to kick! Join the world's greatest action hero in Duke Nukem 3D: 20th Anniversary World Tour as he saves Earth once again, kicking alien ass and saving babes across the globe along the way," reads Gearbox Software's description.

The new anniversary edition of Duke Nukem 3D will also come with a brand-new episode created by the game's original level designers, Allen Blum III and Richard "Levelord" Gray. The new episode, "Alien World Order," includes a brand-new incinerator gun that you'll get to play with in the new episode (and, presumably, only in the new episode).

Original Duke Nukem 3D composer Lee Jackson, who created the iconic Duke Nukem 3D theme, has also contributed a brand-new score for the new episode, and Duke Nukem voice actor Jon St. John has gone back to the recording booth to record a number of new lines for the somewhat-hero to yell out.

Pre-orders for the game have already started, and Gearbox has released a brief trailer highlighting some of the game's new elements. Additionally, it looks like the new version of the game will incorporate some of the best features from the last major version of Duke Nukem 3D, the 2014 Megaton Edition: namely, multiplayer support.
