A new rumor out of China suggests Huawei is going to announce its new flagship smartphone at a pre-CES media event in Las Vegas tomorrow, i.e. January 5th. The device in question, the P9, was earlier expected to arrive no sooner than March.
Huawei hasn’t officially revealed any details yet, it has only released a teaser for the Honor X3 tablet, which will be officially unveiled at the company’s event tomorrow. But if the new rumor is accurate, the company will definitely surprise everyone with the announcement of the P9 as well. The rumor suggests the P9 will be equipped with 6GB of RAM, which would make it the world’s first smartphone to offer 6GB of RAM. While it no doubt sounds impressive on paper, we do wonder if it is really necessary on a smartphone, much like the 4K resolution display on the Sony Xperia Z5 Premium.
The smartphone is also rumored to be powered by Huawei’s new Kirin 950 octa-core SoC with the Mali-T880MP4 GPU handling graphics. It could feature a 5.2-inch sized display on the front, although it looks like Huawei is in no mood to make the jump to Quad HD yet. The P9 could retain the 1080 x 1920 Full HD resolution like previous Huawei flagship devices. Previous rumors have suggested the P9 could feature a dual camera setup at the back, although the resolution of each sensor remains a mystery. A fingerprint scanner will also be offered, which isn’t surprising really. Rest of the specs are unknown at this point, but we should find out more very soon, provided the Chinese rumor doesn’t turn out to be completely inaccurate.
Huawei is also going to be announcing the debut of its Honor brand in the US market at its CES press conference, which was expected after the company joined hands with Google to develop the Nexus 6P.
