Apple is reportedly getting serious about ditching the headphone jack in its next iPhone, and is working on new cordless Beats headphones for you to buy instead
The tech giant is developing Beats headphones that connect to a phone via bluetooth and won’t have any cords at all, according to a new report from 9to5Mac’s Mark Gurman. The earbuds, which should be able to pick up calls and activate Siri, are unlikely to ship with the iPhone 7, Gurman notes—probably because of the premium price. Comparable cordless headphones like the Bragi Dash cost $300.
Apple declined to comment.
Rumors are circulating that Apple is thinking about leaving off the headphone jack from the iPhone 7, a dramatic change to make the phone ever thinner. But consumers don’t sound all that enthusiastic about the change, which would render many pricey accessories completely useless. TechCrunch reported that a petition to ask Apple to not remove the headphone jack has 200,000 signatures.
The iPhone 7 is reportedly slated for a September release, but its design is still up in the air, since the device won’t be going into production for another few months. Gurman says Apple’s testing three different kinds of iPhone 7 prototypes; and a recent Fast Company article says the iPhone 7 might be waterproof and have wireless charging functionality, similar to the Apple Watch.
