Samsung Reveals Upcoming S Pen & Edge Features Headed to Android “N”

Samsung recently updated its developer website for Galaxy devices and has included quite a few references to upcoming “Edge” and “S-Pen” features expected to arrive this year. The upcoming Galaxy S7 Edge has also been confirmed on the developer page, listing some of the key “Edge” features the handset will come with. In addition to these, there are also references to some features that will apparently be “deprecated in N”.

While we cannot be completely sure, “N” here might refer to the next version of Android, which would obviously start with the letter “N”. The “Look APIs” listed on the Samsung developer site suggest the AirButton, SmartClip, and WritingBuddy features for the S-Pen will deprecated in Android N. Similarly, on the Edge devices, the Edge Immersive Mode will be deprecated with the next version of Android. We aren’t quite sure why these features are going to be deprecated with Android N, but it could be possible that Google could offer support for similar features right out of the box with its next Android version. Or, it could also be possible that Samsung will introduce a new set of features that will make these redundant.

Coming back to the Galaxy S7 Edge, the smartphone is going to gain a “wide type” Edge Single Plus strip, which will be able to show more detail than the narrow type strip on the Galaxy S6 Edge. This isn’t entirely new though, the feature was recently added for the S6 Edge and S6 Edge+ as part of the Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow update. When the screen is off, you will be able to use the Edge screen as a clock and also to quickly glance at your notifications, much like the Galaxy S6 and the Galaxy S6 Edge+. While the developer website may not have revealed much about the new Edge features, we do expect Samsung to discuss the new features designed for the Galaxy S7 Edge at the Galaxy Unpacked event at the Mobile World Congress, scheduled to be held on February 21.

The Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge will feature a 5.5-inch sized Quad HD Super AMOLED display, Qualcomm Snapdragon 820/Exynos 8890 SoC, 4GB of RAM, 32/64GB onboard storage with microSD expansion, dust and water resistance build, improved 12MP rear camera with an f/1.7 aperture lens, and more.
