Samsung has officially unveiled the Galaxy Note 7, the latest of its stylus-equipped premier smartphones.

The Note 7 - no, it's not called the Note 6 - picks up where the Note 5 left off, with Samsung adding features from the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge, and then topping it off with a few new twists.

First off, there's a lot of carry-forward from the Galaxy S7/S7 Edge. The Note 6 features the same Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 processor (markets outside the US will see devices equipped with the Samsung Exynos processor), it has 4GB of RAM, the same IP 68 dust- and water-resistance (completely protected against dust, and water-resistant in up to 5 feet of water for up to 30 minutes), and the same 12-megapixel camera with f/1.7 lens.

It also features a microSD card, and a 3,500mAh battery (a fair increase over the 3,000mAh unit found in the Note 5).

Wrapped around this is a 5.7-inch Quad HD Dual edge Super AMOLED display with a resolution of 2560 x 1440 and a pixel density of 518 pixels-per-inch (the display is slightly larger than the 5.5-inch panel in the S7 Edge), and the front and back are protected by a layer of Gorilla Glass 5.

So, that's all familiar. What's new?

Well, along with using the fingerprint reader to unlock the device, you can now use your eyes, thanks to the new iris scanner, which Samsung claims is more secure than using the fingerprint scanner. The iris scanner can be used to lock and unlock apps and data stored on the device.

The Note 7 is also Samsung's first device to feature a USB-C port.

The Note 7 also comes with an upgraded S Pen stylus, which now features a finer 0.7mm tip, twice the pressure-sensitivity, and is waterproof.
